Network of Women Against Violence

This is a translation of s fax sent out by the Network of Women Against Violence, in the name of the Coordinator of NGOs, Social Movements and Unions:

Here's updated information about how to send tax-deductible donations via check (not transfer) to the Women's Network against Violence. This is much easier and cheaper than doing bank transfers:

CEPAD-USA, an ecumenical organization with strong ties to Central American organizations, has offered to be a 501(c)3* umbrella for these donations. They will receive and track the funds and wire them to our special bank account.

* Tax identification number 93-1088705

Make out your check to CEPAD*USA / Women's Network and send to:

CEPAD*USA
P.O. Box 160
Brightwood, OR 97011-0160

They will send receipts to all contributors, and send a report to us. You can also send us an e-mail message or fax with your name, the name of the organization (if any) and an e-mail (preferably) or postal address where we can acknowledge receipt of the donation and later send a report.

We are setting up an English language e-mail listserve for people who want to continue to receive information about what the Coalition is doing (including information from the Network). If you're interested, send a message to cwalter@nicarao.org.ni and put "subscribe Coalition list" in the subject, putting your e-mail address in the message part.

******************************
Below is some updated text about what the Network is doing and why we set up this account.

The Women's Network against Violence in Nicaragua is a member of the steering committee of the Non-governmental Coalition for Emergency Relief and Reconstruction, made up of non-profit organizations, social movements, unions and associations who are participating actively in relief efforts. From the national Network office, we're in constant contact with dozens of groups in the most affected zones, gathering information about their priority needs so that we can channel aid to them. In addition to playing a leading role in organizing relief efforts in their communities, many of these women's centers converted themselves immediately into refuges for families who had lost their homes. Now many of these families have begun to go back to where their houses once were, and most have discovered they are left with nothing. The women's centers are continuing to support them and other families with food, medicine, clothes and other materials. In addition, they continue to attend to women in crisis who are suffering domestic violence and are looking for support. The centers in areas most impacted by the hurricane face demand for their services at a time that they have decreased organizational resources to respond to women experiencing the effects of both the disaster and domestic violence.

The Network has opened a special bank account to channel relief aid. This account is the result of requests from women's, community and international aid groups and individuals in various countries who wanted a trustworthy national organization that could get aid especially to women. At the same time, many women's groups in the affected areas have asked us to be a channel to receive donations. Women's centers in Managua and from other less affected zones are mobilizing their vehicles and staff to take aid to places that are accessible. We are also putting together a project to train community promoters in psychological and emotional support so they can work with the thousands of people in hundreds of communities who are suffering
from post-traumatic stress syndrome.

It's both easier and more useful for us to receive financial aid (as opposed to shipments of goods, which is much more bureaucratic). We are then able to either channel funds directly to the groups, or we can buy and deliver the things that they need that are not included in other aid packages (for example, one group asked us to send underwear, an item that doesn't usually come in donations of used clothing). We will inform everyone who makes a donation about how we've used the funds.You can help people affected by "Mitch" in Nicaragua through the Network of Women Against Violence.
